Utility back Jordan Kahu.

From the Broncos to the Maori All Stars and then the Cowboys – it’s been a week Jordan Kahu won’t forget anytime soon.

The 28-year-old’s whirlwind start to February may finally start to slow down now that the utility back has landed in Townsville and started life under the coaching of Paul Green.

“It was a pretty crazy week to be honest, I was obviously in Maori camp last week and spent most of my week in Melbourne juggling all the commitments … sorting this move out as well was pretty tough,” Kahu said.

Kahu had been with the Broncos since 2009 but could see the writing on the wall at Red Hill.

“I've been around long enough where I kind of knew that I didn't really fit in the team and I didn't see that opportunity at the Broncos unless there was an injury,” he said.

“I wasn't willing to wait around and obviously when I got that feeling (that I wasn’t going to play) I started looking elsewhere.”

Kahu: I'm really excited about the opportunity

In news sure to lift the spirits of Cowboys fans still reeling from Ben Barba’s short-lived stint with the club, Kahu wants to make the No.1 jersey his own in 2019.

“I'm keen to play fullback but I need to work for my spot here and the boys have been slogging away all pre-season and I’ve just rocked up, so I’ll be working hard. I've been working hard since I've been here and I'll keep doing that,” he said.

Signed to a one-year deal, Kahu is hoping to earn himself a long-term deal by helping his new club erase all memory of their unhappy 2018 campaign.

“I could have just stayed in Brisbane where I was comfortable, my family was comfortable,” he said.

“I spent the last 10 years there. I was comfortable with the staff and comfort sometimes only gets you so far so I'm taking this opportunity and I've just backed myself fully and backed my body.

“I've done a lot of work in the pre-season and I'm just hoping I have a big year.”

The newest Cowboy said he was ready to play in Saturday’s trial against the Titans on the Sunshine Coast.

“I haven't spoken to Greeny about it but yeah, I'm keen to get straight into it with the boys,” he said.

“I think the best thing about everything happening so fast was I didn't have time to think about the whole situation and I was just thrown in the deep end.”
