Clint Gutherson agrees to new contract with Parramatta Eels

Clint Gutherson has agreed to a new deal with Parramatta.

He has signed a three-year contract extension.

to confirm the deal on Thursday.

Parramatta Eels Club CEO Bernie Gurr said: "We are delighted to have Clint remain an Eel, and we are keenly aware of what he brings to the Club. He is an asset to our team and a leader both on and off the field."

Eels coach Brad Arthur said Gutherson was a very important part of the team.

"I love coaching Clint, the energy and commitment he brings to work every day is unparalleled. His teammates look up to him and he sets a great example to the whole playing squad, I’m very happy he’s staying."

Gutherson was relieved to finalise his contract negotiations.

Gutherson signs new three-year deal

"I love the club and our loyal fans, I love playing the game and I love my teammates so I’m very happy I’m staying."

Gutherson's decision to sign a new deal will increase his chance of selection for NSW in the State of Origin series.

NSW coach Brad Fittler had made it clear he did not want players in the Blues' squad who were in the middle of negotiations.

Stressing that he wants his squad free of off-field distractions Fittler said on Wednesday night: "It’s incredibly important and we just keep pushing to all our players to get your shit sorted."

Gutherson last played at centre at the end of Parramatta's disastrous 2018 season, and backed himself to handle an Origin call-up even if it did come in one of the game's most challenging defensive positions.

"I would say I could," he said on Wednesday before finalising his new deal.

"I'm in good physical condition, I do all the tough stuff but there's plenty of players putting their hands up.

"I would love to [play] every player wants to play Origin."

Gutherson will line up at fullback for the Eels, desperate for a win after last weekend's heavy defeat at the hands of Melbourne, on Saturday night against the Cowboys in Townsville.
