Wisdom of Wayne the perfect lure for Su'A

South Sydney recruit Jaydn Su'A only needed one phone call from Wayne Bennett to help convince him Redfern was the place to help rejuvenate an NRL career he confesses can produce a mixed bag. 

Su'A fell out of favour under Anthony Seibold at Red Hill after the Broncos slumped to a 2-6 record after a disastrous start to 2019.

The 21-year-old sought a release from the club for which he had played all his junior rugby league as a teenager - a predicament which evoked mixed emotions given the side's position on the ladder.

"I spoke to Wayne and he said there was opportunity here but I have to wait my time and it's been unfortunate there's been a few injuries but it's worked in my favour as well," Su'A said.

"He keeps it simple for me, he knows how I play and that I can come up with something good and there's a chance I can come up with something bad. That's how I work.

"It definitely played a role and I wasn't playing too well either so I can't blame anyone but myself. A few of the younger boys were playing well [at the Broncos] and my game time was getting less and less."

The Rabbitohs admitted they tried to lure Su'A to the club 12 months ago as a replacement for Angus Crichton but fell short, with Bennett doing enough during his time as Broncos coach to convince the former under 20s Maroons captain to stay put.

Bennett handed Su'A his NRL debut in 2016 when he was just 18. 

"I was pretty close [to moving last year] but I chose to stay as that was best for me. But I'm here now and it's all worked out," Su'A said.

"We spoke a few times but I was never set on coming. I'd been in Brisbane since I was 13 and I didn't want to leave my family. But I thought to take my game to the next level I had to step out of my comfort zone."

Su'A represented Toa Samoa for the first time in rep round before shifting to the Bunnies where he's looking to build on his four-year career total of 32 first-grade games.

He's still in the process of organising a car and a place to stay permanently after the frantic departure left him with minimal time to settle.

"The Rabbitohs have got me in an apartment down the road close to training," he said.

"It's pretty tough but they've got me within walking distance so it makes it easier."
