Churchill’s running game helped revolutionise fullback play.

On this day, a team mascot is sent off, Clive Churchill's heroics save Souths, Jarryd Hayne displays his star qualities and the Cowboys produce a miracle comeback.

1955

South Sydney fullback Clive Churchill lifts his team to a crucial 9-7 win over Manly at Redfern Oval by booting a conversion from the sideline.

Early in the match, Churchill breaks his arm when attempting to tackle Manly winger George Hugo. At half-time, Churchill has his arm bound with the cover from an exercise book, before returning to the field.

1991

Kiwi international Jarrod McCracken is suspended for eight matches on a biting charge arising from Canterbury’s clash with South Sydney.

1993

Moses Mbye was born on this day in 1993. Mbye began his career at Canterbury, where he was a late call-up in the 2014 grand final against South Sydney after regular hooker Michael Ennis failed to overcome an ankle injury.

He went on to play 94 games for the Bulldogs before leaving in mid-2018 for Wests Tigers. He made his Origin debut in 2019 playing all three games for Queensland.

After four seasons at the Tigers, Mbye moved to St George Illawarra in 2022.

1995

"Stanley the Steel Avenger" is sent off by referee Tony Maksoud after the mascot becomes involved in a brawl between the Illawarra Steelers and Balmain Tigers players in a home game at Wollongong.

2006

Canberra score a second controversial golden-point win over the Wests Tigers in a month. Halfback Todd Carney kicks the match-winning field goal after twice appearing to rush off his line prematurely to charge down field goal attempts by Tigers’ captain Scott Prince.

2007

North Queensland score three tries in eight minutes to sink Penrith 30-26 in a golden-point thriller at CUA Stadium in round 22.

2016

Jarryd Hayne lives up to his star status, when he lands a last-ditch field goal to hand the Gold Coast a 19-18 victory over Wests Tigers in a thrilling contest at Campbelltown Stadium in round 23.

The victory moved them from 10th to eighth on the NRL ladder and they hung on to make the finals that year.

2017

Wests Tigers rally from a 20-6 half-time deficit to defeat Manly 30-26 at a heaving Leichhardt Oval in their round 23 match. The loss costs the Sea Eagles a place in the top four.     

2020

Sonny Bill Williams prepares to link with Sydney Roosters teammates after being released from 14 days mandatory quarantine at a Sydney apartment.
