Harvey Norman National Championships: Day 1 live blog

The Northern Territory opens side started their campaign on the right note with a 6-0 win over South Australia. A charging effort from back-rower Bianca Stokes on the left edge proved the difference in the 20-minute contest.

South Australia had their chances to level the scores but were well-handled close to the line. NT will back up against the First Nations Gems in game two. 

First Nations Gems proved too good for the Northern Territory in the second game of the day to record a 16-0 win in Redcliffe. 

Tries to Tymekqwa Duckett, Robyn Draper and Janaya Trapman set up the result with Akira Kelly slotting two conversions. 

Kelly and halves partner Kiya Simon were in control of the match with the boot as NT struggled to back up from their opening game success.

First Nations Gems made it two from two with a hard-fought 12-4 victory over Victoria in their second game of the tournament. 

The Gems were lucky to cross first through Kyra Simon after an error was missed in the lead-up to the try. 

A slick backline movement from the Victorians sent Nikita Gentle into space on the right edge to narrow the lead before a solo effort from Gems five-eighth Akira Kelly sealed the result late. 

The Australian Defence Force kicked off their tournament campaign in fashion with a 12-4 victory over Victoria on the opening day of the championships. 

Tries to fullback Lauren Dam and prop Ashlee Makim set up a 12-0 lead early before Victoria hit back through Maleyna Hunapo before full-time. 

Western Australia has caused a first-up boilover over the Australian Defence Force with a close 6-0 win in their opening game of the tournament.

In WA's only match of the day, a strong effort from Kailey Thompson, who also kicked the conversion, split the sides in a tense clash at Moreton Daily Stadium. 

WA will return for two matches on Friday. 

Under 19s (2 x 20min halves)

NSW City has started their under 19s campaign in style with a comprehensive 42-0 victory over Victoria.

It was all one-way traffic for the slick NSW City outfit against a Victorian side who struggled to gain any momentum.

City's right edge caused havoc in the nine-try romp with Andie Robinson crossing for a hat-trick and Losalio Sita Payne going over for a double. 

NSW City will meet Western Australia on Friday, while Victoria will take on Queensland Sapphires.

The Queensland Sapphires have opened their account for the tournament with a 44-0 win over Western Australia in Redcliffe. 

Doubles to Destiny Brill, Ebony Laing and Faith Tutauha were among the highlights in the eight-try romp as WA struggled to keep up with the Sapphires in their maiden game of the tournament.

The Sapphires will play Victoria on Friday, while Western Australia meet NSW City.

Queensland Rubys cruised to a comfortable 66-0 victory over South Australia in the penultimate game of the day.

Rubys prop Jordii Mahendrarajah charged her way over the line for a treble with Traevonnah Fisher, Sierra Maple, April Ngatupuna and Clarissa Baira also troubling the scorecard with doubles each. 

NSW Country rounded out the day with a 28-0 victory over Northern Territory to open their account before a clash against South Australia on Friday.

Doubles to Charlize Lloyd-Phillips and Jordyn Preston set the tone for Country with NT struggling to gain any momentum in the match.
