2023 NRLW Captains announced

nib Newcastle Knights NRLW player Hannah Southwell has been named Captain for the 2023 campaign alongside fullback Tamika Upton as the side's Vice-Captain.

NRLW Head Coach Ronald Griffiths unveiled the news at the Club's NRLW Season Launch on Monday.

A Kotara Bears junior, Southwell returned to Newcastle at the start of last season and was named Co-Captain before unfortunately rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament in Round 1.

The 2023 NRLW Captain is on track to make her comeback in the upcoming campaign.

"I'm very honoured (to be named Captain) and I can't wait to lead the girls out," Southwell said.

"(In 2022) Being able to lead the team out, but not only a team, it's my home team is something I will never forget.

"The injury is going really well, and I've done all my rehab."

Karyn Murphy Medalist (Player of the Match) from the 2022 Grand Final, Tamika Upton was also named Vice-Captain of the side.

The Queensland Origin representative played a crucial role in the 2022 premiership success and is raring to go for Round 1.

"It means everything to be honest, I've spoken with Ronald about my plans and where I want to take my football career," Upton said.

"To lead these girls, alongside Hannah aswell, she is the player you want to play alongside. It's very special.

"Now that we have more rounds, we're going to be able to build more momentum this season."

The NRLW side kick off their season this Saturday at McDonald Jones Stadium from 3:10pm in an exciting double-header with the NRL squad.
