Mato claims 2024 Nellie Doherty Medal

After topping the yardage count for her side across all three games, Maroons forward Shannon Mato was awarded the 2024 Nellie Doherty Medal as Ampol Women's Origin player of the series. 

A key figure in Queensland coming back from defeat in Game One to claim the inaugural three-game series, Mato racked up 448 run metres across the three matches. 

Earlier in the series the 25-year-old was recognised as the player of the match in Queensland's dramatic 11-10 victory in Game Two, while the Titans powerhouse's 151-metre haul in Thursday's decider in Townsville helped lay the platform for a 22-6 win, in what was her eighth Origin appearance.

A stunned Mato struggled for words in her post-match speech but dedicated the honour to her teammates and family.

"To my family, I love you. To my brother, this is for you bro, I love you," Mato said. 

"I couldn't have got this without my teammates, they did literally everything for me."

Mato becomes the seventh woman to win the medal, following on from current Maroons teammates Tazmin Gray (twice) and Tarryn Aiken, along with Sky Blues duo Isabelle Kelly (twice) and Maddie Studdon.
